Character Counter
Instantly check the character and word count of essays, blog posts, and assignments.
Your input is counted only in the browser and never sent to a server.
How is it calculated?
The with-spaces count includes line breaks and spaces as total characters. The without-spaces count removes every whitespace character first. Words are split by spaces, and sentences are split by periods, question marks, exclamation marks, and line breaks.
When to use it
- Cover letters: keep an essay under a “500 characters max” limit in real time.
- Blogs & social: check the length of a Naver blog post or Instagram caption as you edit.
- Assignments & reports: track progress on a task with a minimum length like “1,000+ characters”.
- Contests & essays: trim or expand an answer to fit a tight character limit.
Things to note
- The with/without-spaces basis varies by organization and site, so double-check in the actual input box before final submission.
- The manuscript-paper estimate (about 200 chars per sheet) is approximate and may differ from real sheet counts.
- Combined emoji and special characters may be counted differently depending on the system.
Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between with and without spaces?
With-spaces counts all characters including spaces and line breaks; without-spaces counts after removing every whitespace character. Cover letters usually use the with-spaces basis, but it varies by organization, so always check the posting.
Which basis should I use for a cover letter?
Companies and job portals differ on the with/without-spaces basis, and some application forms count differently in their own field. Before final submission, paste into the actual input box and verify once more.
How are words and sentences counted?
Words are chunks split by spaces; sentences are split by periods, question marks, exclamation marks (. ! ? 。!?) and line breaks. Because of language nuances the count may differ slightly from actual sentences, so use it as a reference.
Are emoji and special characters counted as one character?
Counting is based on visible characters, so most emoji and special characters are included. However, some combined emoji may count as two or more characters depending on the system.
Is my text stored on a server?
No. Counting happens entirely inside your browser; the text you enter is never sent to or stored on a server.
